Start here. Adjust for your plant. Forgive yourself when a leaf has other plans.
LESS GUESSWORK. MORE GROWTH.
Check the potting mix before you reach for the watering can. Moisture needs vary by plant, pot, light, and season.
Read the watering guide →“Bright” means something different to a plant. Start with its light needs, then watch how it responds.
Get to know your light →A beautiful pot is even better when roots aren’t sitting in leftover water. Drainage deserves a little attention.
Check your pot setup →Identify your plant and learn its moisture needs. Feel the potting mix with a finger and notice how heavy the pot feels. A dry surface alone doesn’t tell you whether the roots need water.
When watering is appropriate, wet the mix evenly and let excess water drain. Empty the saucer or decorative outer pot. Don’t leave the plant soaking unless its care instructions specifically call for it.
Check how much direct sun reaches the spot throughout the day. Window direction, shade outside, and distance from the glass all matter.
Match the location to the species. Move plants gradually when changing light conditions and watch for scorching, weak growth, or stretching. Those signs can have more than one cause.
Use a nursery pot with drainage holes inside a decorative pot, or choose a planter that drains. Let water escape, and empty what collects underneath.
Use potting mix suited to your plant. Before repotting, check whether it’s actually needed; a larger pot can hold moisture longer.
These are general starting points. Care needs vary by species and growing conditions. Identify plants and check pet safety before bringing them home.
